With a total of 2,080 public and private colleges and universities in the Philippines (as of August 2007), it is quite difficult for high school graduates in the Philippines to choose the college or university in which they will spend 4 to 5 years of their life. Many students and parents are looking for the best universities in the land because they believe that “school name” would have a huge impact on their career and success in board examinations. Many parents spend a fortune just to send their kids into the best universities. They simply want their children to gain an edge to hundreds of thousands of college graduates every year. Most likely, students and parents equate quality education to the popularity of a college or university. Some of them even look at the ranking of the school in international, regional, and local ranking of higher education institutions.
Ranking of colleges and universities in the Philippines and the world has received controversies. Many universities criticized these published rankings of universities because the criteria used are either inadequate or questionable. In fact, few Philippine university administrators expressed that they don’t want to be included in international ranking of colleges and universities claiming that the methodology used was problematic. However, they are still included in annual international rankings with few of them made it to the top 1000 worldwide.
In this post, I will give you the top 10 list of Philippine colleges and universities based on their average passing rate in the board examinations of all courses from 1991-2001. The ranking is based on the result of the study conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Take note that this study is conducted every 10 years and the last ranking was released in 2007.
